Letters to the Editor: Questions about Cornwall Geese

June 04, 2014

 To the Editor:

At the Cornwall Town Board Working Sesssion Meeting last night, 6/3: Tom DiCarrado, Chairman of our now-defunct Geese Committee, after ascertaining that Randy Clark, Town Supervisor, did not know the current status of the USDA's egg oiling or culling plans for this year, just asked: "Will you commit to nonlethal means?"

Randy Clark: "I will not agree to not killing the geese."

A chorus of geese supporters: "WHY NOT?"

I cannot recall him answering that very basic question over the next 10 minutes. There is no logical answer, actually. If anyone is interested in asking him themself, I would try to ask him in person, as he--as well as the majority of the Board--do not respond to emails at all.

3 of the 4 Board members said absolutely nothing--as usual--on the matter. However, Board Member and former Town Supervisor Helen Bunt did speak up immediately, telling the audience that she will not agree to the goose culling. Brava, Ms. Bunt!

Many thanks to everyone who spoke and came out to support our cause.

We haven't given up yet--we owe our town's geese that. And we know Cornwall's residents--human and animal alike-- deserve fair-minded, respectful public servants in Town Hall. Thankfully, future elections afford us the opportunity to make sure future administrations serve the people who put them in office.

Thank you,

Leslie Maltese-McGill
Cornwall Geese Committee

Comments:

I think the town should adopt those wolves that are being hunted out west. That way a natural predator-prey dynamic can establish itself. I think it would solve all the other domesticated wildlife issues in town too.

Wolves. I like it. What could go wrong?

Or perhaps we can arrange a steel cage death match between the overpopulated, tame-as-cats geese and the overpopulated, tame-as-cats, deer. That way both wildly out of balance populations will cut down on each other's numbers and no Cornwall resident or town official will have blood on their hands.

I for one am not sure why we "owe our Town's geese" anything. They do not belong to the town, and given the amount of pooping they do on our public town property, I get the sinking feeling they don't even like us that much! I mean, why don't these freeloaders just go back to Canada? (It even says Canada in their name if you haven't noticed) What about jobs for American geese!? You can be sure that they just want to have their goslings here in the US so that they get a foothold.

Why isn't Obama DOING SOMETHING ABOUT THIS!?
