Dear Editor,
We’re very pleased to inform you that our 2013 fundraising event was a huge success due to the generosity of many like yourself. Since 2012 we have funded Devon Carter Honor Scholarships awarded to graduating seniors entering college. We intend to continue on this path of youth enrichment in supporting higher education, physical fitness and teamwork through youth sports, while investing in our future through supporting young men and women entering college. The 2014 main event will take place on May 16th at Cornwall Central High School 7pm.
New City Swarm Youth Sports presents the “3rd Annual Devon Carter Honor Basketball Game Event” this is an event that is organized by a committee of community members including School Faculty, Coaches, Teammates, Alumni and Students. We honor the life of an unforgettable young man and give back in his name.
The students, his high school & AAU teammates and members of the community are very excited about coming together once again to honor a respected true friend that was loved & admired for his loyalty and confidence, which is deeply missed. The event will be a fun family night that is centered around things that Devon was passionate about, basketball, sharing fun times with friends/family and knowing that higher education was a big part of him achieving his goals and being successful in life.
The proceeds from this event will benefit our mission of youth enrichment and also donated as the Devon Carter Honor College Scholarship to a student athlete graduating in the class of 2013. Members of the faculty will use criteria selected by the committee to nominate and submit student’s essays to the committee for a vote. The recipient of the award will be announced in June and will affect the student’s future in a positive way. We intend to assist the student on their path of reaching their goals through higher education. This is the path that Devon was on in the summer of 2011 when he was
attending Sullivan Community College for his 2nd year with the dreams of pursuing a career in Sports Broadcast Journalism before his unexpected passing.
Devon was a former Cornwall HS student athlete and one of the founding members of New City Swarm Youth Sports Basketball Program along with some of his future HS basketball teammates in 2006. When he was unable to make it on his school team he used this time with the Swarm to improve and work on his game along with his teammates. Together they created a brotherhood and memories that will last a lifetime. His persistence, perseverance and hard work showed when he made it on the Varsity HS team in his sophomore year after trying out for three years. In his 18 years of life he always worked hard when he was passionate about something he wanted. There are many times in his life that he showed perseverance and admirable strength. In his senior year he was told that by his doctor that he would not be able play for few months fearing that he had developed a rare blood platelet disorder. Through this time he continued to be the same fun loving positive young man. He proved to be a true team player still attending practice and making sure to be at the games to support his team and cheer them on from the bench until his health improved and he could participate. In late 2011 the Swarm teams were renamed “Devv Carter Swarm” in his memory. Now many young girls and boys can discover the rewards of participating in team sports as he did.
Many of his former Swarm AAU and Cornwall alumni teammates several currently playing college basketball are eagerly waiting to play in this event on the behalf of a brother that they describe as an unforgettable true friend.
