General News: Mastodon Day

Neuhaus celebrates “Mastodon Day” with fourth graders at Willow Avenue Elementary School in Cornwall

Goshen, N.Y. – Orange County Executive Steven M. Neuhaus spent part of Wednesday morning meeting with fourth-grade students at Willow Avenue Elementary School in Cornwall to celebrate “Mastodon Day.”

Debra Gilson and her class invited Neuhaus to visit after learning the history of mastodons in Orange County. Neuhaus declared Wednesday, October 11th “Mastodon Day” in Orange County during his meeting with two fourth-grade classes in the auditorium at Willow Avenue Elementary School.

Neuhaus was joined at the event by Orange County Historian Johanna Yaun.

“I enjoyed spending time with the schoolchildren, the faculty and the staff at Willow Avenue Elementary School,” Neuhaus said. “They are wonderful hosts and it was great to return to the school for the third year in a row. The opportunity to be with the youth of the County is always an inspiring and rewarding part of my job. I look forward to celebrating Mastodon Day with Ms. Gilson’s fourth graders again next year.”

Mastodons have a rich history in Orange County. Thirty-eight skeletons have been found since 1780, making Orange County the unofficial capital of exhumed mastodons in the U.S. Mastodons inhabited North and Central America approximately 10,000 years ago. They are distantly related to elephants.

Two years ago, Gilson’s entire class sent Neuhaus hand-written letters, asking him to visit their classroom, and make a “Mastodon Day” in Orange County. The County Executive obliged and has been delighted to accept Gilson’s invitation to return to Willow Avenue Elementary School the last two years. Neuhaus presented each of the students with a proclamation certificate declaring another “Mastodon Day” in Orange County.

“Thanks to County Executive Neuhaus, yet another group of students are excited to learn about Orange County’s rich history,” Gilson said. “His enthusiasm for hearing from them regarding their mastodon is genuine and much appreciated. For County Executive Neuhaus to take time to celebrate what makes our county special with them will be a lasting memory for them.”
