County kicks off Breast Cancer Awareness Month by launching “Orange County Goes Pink” initiative to help American Cancer Society raise funds and awareness about breast cancer
District Attorney David Hoovler will follow County Executive Neuhaus in supporting the Real Men Wear Pink campaign
Goshen, N.Y. – Orange County Executive Steven M. Neuhaus, District Attorney David Hoovler and Sheriff Carl E. DuBois joined the American Cancer Society (ACS) on Monday at the County’s Emergency Center to kick off the County’s “Orange County Goes Pink” initiative in recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
Health Commissioner Dr. Eli Avila also spoke at the event.
Hoovler proudly announced that he will participate in this year’s Real Men Wear Pink Hudson Valley campaign. During the month of October, Hoovler will commit to wearing something pink each day and use his influence to raise awareness and funds to support the American Cancer Society’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer movement. October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
The Real Men Wear Pink initiative brings together an impressive group of community leaders who raise awareness about breast cancer and funds for the Society’s breast cancer initiatives, including innovative research, patient services and education about screening and risk reduction. Neuhaus raised funds to benefit the Real Men Wear Pink’s inaugural campaign last year and invited Hoovler to take part this year.
“It’s great that District Attorney Hoovler is taking part in the Real Men Wear Pink campaign and Sheriff DuBois and I are proud to support him and to work with the American Cancer Society to raise awareness about breast cancer,” Neuhaus said. “I had a wonderful time being a part of Real Men Wear Pink last year and I know that Dave will serve as a wonderful ambassador for the program. This campaign plays an important role in the fight against breast cancer and I’m proud of the work that Orange County does to promote awareness.”
Hoovler added: “I’m honored to be a part of the Real Men Wear Pink initiative and to work with the American Cancer Society. Many of us have been affected by breast cancer in some way and this campaign offers critical information about the disease and support to those affected by breast cancer. We are all committed to raising awareness and funds for the society’s efforts.”
Orange County employees unite each October to raise money, awareness, volunteer and participate in the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk held annually at Woodbury Common Premium Outlets. The County’s Team “Healthy Orange Goes Pink” raised more than $2,000 last year for the American Cancer Society’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer.
As in past years, the team will hold a county-wide employee dress down day, set for Friday, October 13th. Employees can donate $5 and wear casual clothes for the day. All funds raised will go toward Team Orange’s fundraising efforts.
This year’s walk is set for Sunday, October 15, 2017 at Woodbury Common Premium Outlets in Central Valley, NY. Individuals, companies, friends and neighbors can register to walk by calling 845-440-2508 or online at www.makingstrideswalk.org/hudsonvalley. There is no fee to register, though contributions and donations are greatly appreciated.
Making Strides Against Breast Cancer is a non-competitive, inspirational event that raises awareness and funds to end breast cancer and provide hope to ensure no one faces breast cancer alone. Funds raised through the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk enable the American Cancer Society to invest in groundbreaking research, provide free, comprehensive information and support to those touched by breast cancer; and help people take steps to reduce their breast cancer risk or find it early when it’s most treatable. Last year, 1.4 million walkers raised more than $60 million across the country at more than 250 events.
“The American Cancer Society Making Strides walk supports the fight against the second leading cause of cancer death in women,” said Patti Lestrange Mack, Communications Director for the American Cancer Society. “An estimated 252,710 women (and 40,610 men) in the United States will be diagnosed with breast cancer and 40,610 women (and 460 men) will die from the disease this year. We appreciate County Executive Neuhaus’ and Orange County’s loyal support.”
