General News: Distrated Driving Awareness Month

April 09, 2018

“National Distracted Driving Awareness Month”
Enforcement Mobilization Dates: April 12, 2018 thru April 16, 2018

The Village of Cornwall-on-Hudson Police Department will be participating in New York State, “National Distrated Driving Awareness Month” from April 12, 2018 thru April 16, 2018. COHPD officers will be strictly enforcing New York State’s Mobile Phone and Portable Electronic Device Laws during this mobilization period. The Village of Cornwall-on-Hudson Police Department is committed to keeping both state highways, county roadways and village roadways within the Village of Cornwall-on-Hudson, safe for both pedestrian and vehicular traffic and preventing deaths and injuries resulting from distracted driving.

In 2015 alone, 3,477 people were killed, and 391,000 were injured in motor- vehicle crashes involving distracted drivers. During daylight hours approximately 666,000 drivers are using cell phones while driving. That creates enormous potential for deaths and injuries on U.S. roads. Teens were the largest age group reported as distracted at the time of fatal crashes.

Composing, sending, reading, accessing, browsing, transmitting, saving, or receiving electronic data such as e- mail, text messages or webpages.

“Portable Electronic Device” shall mean any hand- held mobile telephone, personal digital assistant (PDA), handheld device with mobile data access, laptop computer, pager, broadband personal communication device, two- way messaging device, electronic game or portable computing device.
