Letters to the Editor: Community Conversations

July 27, 2017

Letter to the Editor
Date: July 18, 2017

The role of the Cornwall Public Library has always been to serve as a source of knowledge and learning for the community. About a year ago, the Library began facilitating “Community Conversations” about timely topics suggested by members of our community. These Conversation sessions are advertised, open to the public, and have generated a great exchange of information. On June 29th, over 60 people attended a Community Conversation on the topic of the Town’s proposal to use Riverlight Park land as a location to build a prefab building for the Cornwall Historical Society. The building would be used to house the museum’s collection. Concerns discussed centered on the planning process, museum location and cost, and the needs of our community. There appeared to be a general consensus about the need for a better location for the Historical Society, with many ideas put forth for consideration. In an effort to always foster transparency, the Library has published notes and minutes from this Community Conversation on its website, and shared the notes with the Town Board members and newspaper who were not in attendance. The Town has stated it won’t hold a public forum on this topic until the “alienation of park land” or permission to use this land is granted by the Legislature and signed by the Governor, which is a mere formality in the process. It is clear from the attendance on June 29th, as well as several Town Board meetings, that the citizens of Cornwall would like to discuss this sooner rather than later. The Library has no official position on this topic except to express our concerns already raised about parking and drainage in the park. As stated above, the notes from this Community Conversation are available on our website at www.cornwallpubliclibrary.org and we thank the community for attending and contributing to the many great Community Conversations. Suggestions for future topics are always welcome.

Carol Stein
Board President
On Behalf of the Cornwall Public Library Board of Trustees
