General News: Choral Workshop

January 25, 2017

The Choral Music Department of Cornwall Central School District will be hosting our Sixth Biennial Choral Workshop on Wednesday morning, Feb. 1, 2017 from 10:15-11:30 AM (snow date, Friday, Feb. 3) in the Cornwall Central HS Auditorium, 10 Dragon Drive, New Windsor, NY 12553.

This educational workshop will involve all Cornwall Central School District Choral Ensembles, Grades 4-12 gathering at CCHS to exchange choral directors for rehearsal sessions, in order to reinforce and expand student vocal skills. Each group will then perform for the other ensembles, helping students appreciate how their own voices have grown and will change in the future. The finale of the workshop will be a large-scale performance of a piece with a humanitarian theme. This will involve all choral students grades 4-12 and HS instrumentalists, enabling students to participate in the universality of the choral music experience.

Music teachers involved in this project will be Karen Snider, Kelly Van Demark, Lisa Moriarty, Barbara Horne and Tony Ravinsky. Besides the incredible value this program has provided for students over the years, the Choral Workshop has also served as a beneficial professional development experience for CCSD music teachers, as they observe and share each others' teaching techniques. The recurring Choral Workshop event has proven extremely effective, as participation in the vocal music program has grown from approximately 400 to 800 students since the Workshop was first instituted by teacher Tony Ravinsky in 2007.

Because of the enormous number of students involved in the workshop, we regret that we are not able to fit visitors in our auditorium; the participants themselves will serve as audience, performers, teachers and learners, growing in their ability to contribute to society through their appreciation of the arts.
