Around Town >> Those Darn Honkers !!! (All Star Teams)

Just a thought....

Imagine you are driving on Willis Ave towards Hudson St. as the honkers are moving along....

Suddenly, from between two parked cars, a child darts into your path, facing Hudson with back towards you...

You hit the brake pedal and HONK.... but the child doesn't react because, well....its just another honk in the din of honking.

Alas, too bad we don't have horns with messages, like the smiley faces (emoticons) that help inflect our words in the electronic media.

So, if you injure the child, or worse.... who is to blame?

This is silly it seems like everyone in this village likes to complain...and always about the kids. why though? because they cant fight back. because they are louder than most adults? if every one will remember last year it was the skaters, with the same argument, its loud and unsafe but this isn’t for them. the honkers as far as I can see are NOT breaking any laws other than mis-use of their horns. and since there is a cop leading the honkers I believe that anyone would know they are not honking in warning but in celebration. as for the coaches standing that is wrong and I have seen that they should sit just as the team does. but at someplace under 10mph even if an accident does occur the injuries most likely would not be VERY severe maybe a broken bone. death would be hard to cause unless some one had head trauma. and as for the noise that seems to be a problem too however it is no louder than fireworks that the town sets off at 9:30 at night, and usually teams are not out after 9pm and if there is ONE day a team goes later why cant you ignore it its not an everyday thing and honking is not an all year thing its only in the summer. over all I think Cornwall just has a problem with its children. kids know what they can do and not get hurt but accidents so happen that’s life but why not let the kids have fun as they go? and if honking bothers every one why doesn't all the bikers with no helmets become a problem? because they are quieter? they go faster than the honkers and more often but nobody cares about them.

I'm sorry, I thought we were having a debate.

I am going to take your advice "Community Father" and quit posting.

All I ask people to do, is relax and celebrate the tradition with these kids and families.  Give them a wave and a honk.  These are nice kids who have worked very hard.  They deserve it.

I think the sad fact is that there are people in this town that don't want to be bothered.  If you celebrate at the park, there are going to be a hundred people who decide that it is too loud, interrupts their family picnic, ect.  Who are you to decide where and when it is appropriate and proper for people to celebrate?  What you find proper will likely irritate someone else.

So you can site the laws, but the bottom line is...you just don't like it.

All Star honking has been going on in this town for years.  Believe it or not there are many people who find it a fun summer tradition.

In case you didn't know or notice, many of these disrespectful parents volunteer in various sports (in addition to other town activities) and without their time and help, there would be even more skateboarders running you off the sidewalk or kids spray painting the schools and businesses.   Many of these kids "disrespecting Cornwall" are honor role students that have worked extremely hard on the field and off.   Winning an All Star game may not seem like a big deal to you, but for these kids, it is what they work all summer for.  Every game is a championship game for them.

Wait! Wait!  Did you happen to miss the point that it is ILLEGAL to use your horn in such a fashion, and that the way in which most or many of the tailgates travel is also ILLEGAL.  ILLEGAL.

NOBODY ever tried to squelch the happiness or joy of children, which is WHY I stated it is for the parents.  Many people have suggested safe options, and I keep saying why not do celebrating at the little league complex.  I never said it was a bad thing to celebrate, I said it could be done in any other fashion.  It is the parents who are insistent that celebration HAS to be a line of honking cars and screaming kids.  Allow me to reiterate, STOP attempting to use kids as an excuse to behave badly, be disrespectful and break the law.  It is a sad sad day when the respect in Cornwall is replaced by selfishness.  THAT is the sad day in Cornwall.  You can pat yourselves on the back that you are sticking up for your kids, but it is your job to raise your kids properly.  Putting them in dangerous situations and teaching them it disrespect the community is not raising them properly. And NO it is not selfish of my to want the honking to stop, I have NEVER said they kids cant celebrate.  I have just said that this is not the proper way to do it.  Please, by all means have all the fun you want, but we have public meeting areas for a reason, and we pay good tax money to keep those areas clean and pretty so that as townspeople we may WANT to congregate there.  I see no reason why they cant throw a nightly celebration at the park in town, and everyone can gather and enjoy and celebrate if they choose.  I could completely agree to tolerate the honking if it was regulated to ONLY occurring at the championships, with PROPER LEGAL accommodations for the tailgates, but this is not acceptable to the little league parents.  There is no reason anyone in this town needs to cry mean to my kid because there is a LARGE subset of people who would like some consideration and common sense for a town organization.
