Community Minded

I have been proud to participate in the tradition of "honking".

These children who participate in sports have a sense of pride and accomplishment.  Statistics show that children who participate in team sports grow up to be well-balanced, productive members of society and don't sell drugs on street corners.  Very much unlike the lady, which term I use very loosely, who resides in the Village on the right hand side of Hudson Street, if traveling toward the river, past St. Thomas.  I was absolutely mortified to witness a grown woman, screaming vulgarities at the top of her lungs and giving obscene finger gestures to little girls who are celebrating an incredible victory.  This "lady" accompanied by another female and a "gentlemen" were a prime example of what happens to people who are uneducated, societal misfits, with a grab-bag of various dysfunctions.

Maybe if this trio had played team sports as children, they too would have a sense of community, pride and maybe even basic manners.

I would also like to recognize the Village PD for reaching out to the local teams and taking a proactive approach to building a relationship of trust and citizenship with the residents of tomorrow. Police-community realtions are the cornerstone of a great place to live.

When it comes down to it, are these kids really hurting anyone?  Is the few minutes they take to celebrate their achievements really damaging to anyone?  If it bothers you THAT much, plug your ears for 7 minutes or turn your television up a couple of decibels.  Either way…. get over it.  Worry about global warming or some other important issue in life.

I am a coach of the Minor League Cornwall Softball AllStars.  As when I was an All Star ( I am 43) when the team earns a victory the team drives from the Key Food Plaza honking and shouting to let the town/Village know we won our game.

These young ladies represent the Town and Village when they play their games at far flung fields accross the County.  It has been a pleasure to see the Village Police Department Support our team by leading the line of cars making it safer and more enjoyable for all.  A Highlight of the girl's enjoyment comes when the Police Vehicle is wating for them at the Village line.  I can't help but think that these healthy, busy kids will have a good relationship with the Village P.D. as they get older.  As we have noticed from the ever increasing headlines of late, this is very important.  Thank you Village PD.

For those folks upset about that ten minutes of honking as displayed by their thrust up middle fingers and challenges to "come and get some" especially the family who lives  in one of the Brick homes  on Hudson Street  on the right side as you travel south towards St. Thomas Church:  I have the following to say to you :  Jerry Springer is waiting for you appearance on his show.  I'm happy you have a camera in hand and are screaming obscenities at 9 and 10 year old girls.  Thanks for showing the depth of your morality, your education level, and the fine upbringing you pass on to your children as they stand next to you while you conduct yourself.  Quite simply - you're out of your minds.

For those residents who cheer our girls, wave, or honk back at us we appreciate you.  You obviously remember what it's like to be a child.  The tradition of the All Star "Honk" goes back for more than three generations.  It's a pleasure to see Village Residents still embrace the children as they come back from a victory.  Isn't this why we live here?  These "small" traditions go a very, very, long way.
