Around Town >> Those Darn Honkers !!! (All Star Teams)

Well obviously I can't speak for every team ever honking in the Village.  I don't have surveillance set up.

I know the girls teams are not allowed to honk after 9.

Please name the date and time that all 9 teams have gone honking in one night and the honking lasted for over an hour?

Are you speaking that it could happen potentially? If so, it s a farce.  Potentially one person per household in the Village can ride their bikes on the road at the same time and cause safety issues and congestion on the streets.  But it is highly unlikely that it will actually happen.

FYI, after 2 weeks, there aren't even 9 teams left in the "post season".

I know girls have NEVER had a game on the same day as all of the other teams.

I know one night last week when the major girls, minor girls and one of the boys teams all went honking together.  So maybe it lasted 15 minutes, but no way the people in the lower village hear it when it begins at Dunkin Donuts.  So when I say 7 minutes, I mean when it is apparent and near your home.  Not straining to hear it off in the distance.

As far as safety, there is a better chance of children being killed in a regular old car ride than in the 3 mile honking parade.  As a matter of fact I think it is the number one cause of death in the US for children.

I think there are also greater risks to children with childhood obesity then the 3 mile, 8 MPH honking parade that lasts only a few weeks in the summer.

We can't lock them in closets until they are adults.  There must be a little "controlled" risk in life.

I certainly don't agree with hanging out of an open van or honking at 10:30 PM.  I merely stated that I never heard it.

All I am saying is let the kids have some fun.     If it is done at a reasonable time (before 8:30 in my opinion) and with parental supervision, let them do it.  During the summer this community is alive with walkers, kids playing, people swimming in their pools and families having graduation parties.  This town does not shut down at 6:00 PM so everyone can get some peace and quite.   When the "honkers" drive by, let's say for arguements sake with 8 cars following, the loudest honking that I hear only lasts about  2 mins. each way.  As they go down the street I don't hear it anymore.  I think even the biggest sticks in the mud can handle that.

These arguments are interesting indeed.

I cannot remember even one night that I have heard nine teams go by honking.   I am pretty sure I have not heard an hour of honking on any given night.  I have actually seen 2 or 3 teams consolidating into one celebration.  Perhaps to lessen the frequency?

Riding in the back of a pick-up for the distance and speed that they do is legal.  Maybe our energy would be better spent addressing children riding bikes without helmets and drivers blowing through crosswalks.  You want to talk about an accident waiting to happen.....

Fritz, I live very close to Hudson Street and didn't hear any honking at 10:30 PM.  Are we now assuming that every honk we hear is from a game?  I can assure you that I hear honking, (unfortunately) among other things all through the night.

Just to let you all know, the adult coaches do ride in the back of the truck with the girls, the girls MUST stay seated and they travel very slow with the tailgate fastened.

Some more info for those concerned with nightime honking:  There is no honking after 9 pm.  If the team gets back from a win at 9:15, they must honk the next day.

The honking does go on for more than just softball.  I friend of mine who's daughter is in her late 20's, used to go honking after every soccer win.  Not just up and down Main & Hudson, but also up Angola.

For the poster who suggested only honking in post-season...it is post season and that's when the honking started.

We have very successful teams!  The minor girls have won the division (best in Orange County)  and head to sectionals July 30th.

The Major Girls are in the State tournament today.  Yes..the are of the BEST 4 teams in the entire state.

The 11 year old girls and the boys teams have had great success as well.

Some of the teams have been eliminated and the honking shuold be cut in about half as a result.
