Lecture at the Library

CORNWALL PUBLIC LIBRARY TO HOST LECTURE on JOHN D. ROCKEFELLER

CORNWALL – The Cornwall Public Library will host a lecture, “John D. Rockefeller: The Richest Person Who Ever Lived,” from 6-7:45 p.m. March 26. This program was rescheduled from its original Feb. 12 date, due to inclement weather. Rick Feingold, Professor of American History at Bergen Community College, will present the lecture.

Asked how he became so rich, Rockefeller once replied, “God gave me my money.” Rockefeller began in the oil refining business soon after the Pennsylvania Oil Rush of 1859. He built state-of-the-art refineries and bought out his rivals, negotiating secret rebates with the railroads. Rockefeller formed what would later become the Standard Oil Trust, which was eventually broken up after the Supreme Court ruled it a monopoly. But the individual oil companies were worth more separately, and Rockefeller would go on to enter a second life of philanthropy, which lives on today.

The lecture is free, and registration is not required.
