Halo

from Jim Lawless

There was a halo around the sun today here in the northeast, made more obvious when the sun tucked behind this cloud.

This phenomenon occurs when ice crystals in the upper atmosphere bend the sun's rays creating a "rainbow" of sorts just a few degrees (22 degrees to be exact) away from the sun. It indicates an approaching front and sailors say you can be sure of rain (or snow) within 24 hours....it rained by 7 o'clock this evening. If you see a "ring" like this around the sun (or the full moon) extend your hand at arm's length, spread you thumb and pinkie finger as wide apart as possible, put your thumb at the center of the sun and the pinkie will line up with the ring. You then know there will likely be precipitation within 24 hours!
