Village Snapping Turtle

How would you like to run into this monster turtle first thing in the morning?  That’s what happened to Bill Braine on Tuesday when he looked down the driveway of his home on Hudson Street in Cornwall-on-Hudson.  Minutes earlier his wife had been parked in the spot where the giant snapping turtle now ambled along.

Bill writes that the turtle was headed from the public library and Ring’s Pond back to the pond next to his neighbor’s house.   He notes that female snapping turtles lay their eggs in moist soil.

After the photo session, Bill watched the turtle lumber off into a small patch of woods and brush, then down toward his neighbor’s pond.

Comments:

The Library sees an Alligator Snapping Turtle migrate every spring to Rings Pond, and every fall back to the woods. She has already migrated to Rings Pond earlier this year. A second one (perhaps the same as in the pix) showed up last year and we think it might be a male who's visiting "Allie", then returning home. Last year 'he' had to be physically removed from beneath a patron's car by another patron and was not a happy turtle, by any means! "Allie" has been making 'her' annual migration for years and has become a library mascot of sorts!

The plot thickens. Surely someone at the nature museum could straighten out which turtle is who. I would point out though, that the specimen above (and presumably Allie) doesn't appear to be an alligator snapping turtle -- rather a Common snapper. The alligator turtle has a much different shell and can grow to be much larger (although this one is very large for a Common Snapping Turtle).
