Obituaries: Lawrence S. Hanretta, Jr.

July 28, 2018

Lawrence "Larry" S. Hanretta, Jr., of Cornwall, NY, passed away suddenly on Tuesday, July 24, 2018. He was 68 years old.

Larry was born on August 11, 1949, in Cornwall, NY. He was the son of the late Lawrence S. Hanretta, Sr., and Regina Meyers Hanretta. He was a lifelong resident of Cornwall, and loved his hometown. Larry worked as an insurance salesman for Prudential Insurance and then went on to become District Manager of Market Distribution Specialists, in Elmsford, NY, where he was responsible for a large territory.

Larry was a skilled athlete in his youth and beyond, attaining All-American in football in high school, and he was one of Cornwall Central High School's (CCHS) leading basketball scorers. Additionally he excelled at baseball in high school. He went on to Seton Hall University after high school. He even made a Hole in One at Storm King Golf Club in the early 1980s.

He was an avid sports fan and a passionate Mets supporter, no matter what the score. Larry knew every statistic there was to know about baseball, basketball, and football. He was also a comedian, making people laugh wherever he went, and leaving a smile on their faces. He loved people and making connections with others through his gift of communication.

For Larry, his greatest achievement was his beautiful family. He married Kathleen Miller in October of 1974, and grew a family rich in faith. They had two daughters, Bridget and Kelly, who were Larry's pride and joy. He delighted in their every achievement and goal. His happiness extended when his daughters married, and each had their own babies, giving Larry three lovely and talented grandchildren to cherish over the last years of his life.

He enjoyed spending time with the CCHS alumni, even recently actively attending several reunions and meet-ups. His canine companion, Darla, was always next to Larry like a shadow, and often accompanied him to the Cornwall-on-Hudson riverfront, where he would sit, relax, and visit with friends and strangers alike.

Larry is survived by his wife, Kathleen Miller Hanretta, daughter Bridget O'Brien and her husband, Francis O'Brien, daughter Dr. Kelly Hanretta and her husband, Dr. Peter Hobeika. He is also survived by his brothers, Charles Hanretta and William Hanretta, and his sister, Regina Wagner. Additionally he is survived by his beloved grandchildren, Fallon, Desmond, and Christian, as well as several nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family. Larry will be missed terribly by all. His Brussels Griffon, Darla, will be lost without him.

Visitation will be held on Sunday, July 29th, 2018, from 2pm to 4pm and 6pm to 9pm at James F. Lulves Funeral Home, 9 Avenue A, Cornwall-on-Hudson, NY, 12520. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, July 30th, at 10:30am at St. Thomas of Canterbury Church, 340 Hudson Street, Cornwall-on-Hudson, NY, 12520. Burial will follow in St. Thomas Cemetery, Cornwall, NY.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Larry’s name to Holy Trinity Catholic Academy, 14-45 143rd Street, Whitestone, NY, 11357.
