Obituaries: Barry Douglas Brown

April 28, 2018

Barry Douglas Brown, a life-long resident of Cornwall, New York, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Sunday, April 22, 2018. He was 74 years old. He passed away peacefully, at home, surrounded by his family. He was the son of the late Charlie Brown and Grace E. (Barnes) Brown. He was predeceased by his sister, Joyce Retta.

Barry was born on July 31, 1943, in Cornwall, New York. He was a 1961 graduate of Cornwall High School. Many knew him as a talented baseball player in his youth, when he earned the nickname “Bullet” for his speed. Barry served in the New York Army National Guard. He was a member of the Carpenters Local Union 279 and later became a self-employed contractor.

Barry was a builder, gifted sculptor, art enthusiast, and avid reader. He was a member of the Cornwall Baptist Church, Sons of the American Revolution, Vassar College Libraries, and the Ramapo-Catskill Library System. Barry was a man wholly devoted to his family and fiercely loved in return. He had a strong faith, which was exhibited in his many caring ways towards others. He was the salt of the earth. Barry was an adoring husband, immensely proud father and grandfather, and uncle. He loved his friends and family dearly and filled their lives with his kind spirit, sense of humor, and unending support.

He is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Diane, son, Barry (Melinda) Brown of Marina del Rey, CA, daughters, Joan (Mark) Mason of Alpharetta, GA, Rebecca (Steve) Scherrer of Washingtonville, NY, and Sarah (Pete) Llewellyn of New Windsor, NY, and five grandchildren: Barry and Jacob Brown, Mark Mason, and Stephen and Dennis Scherrer. Barry was happily looking forward to meeting his sixth grandchild, due this June. He is also survived by his brother, Charlie (Sandy) Brown, brother, Robert (Susan) Brown, brother-in-law John Cavalari, and several nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held at the Cornwall Baptist Church, 213 Main Street, Cornwall, NY, on April 28th from 1-4 PM, immediately followed by a Celebration of Life Service, officiated by Rev. Stephen Racite.

Barry's interment will be at Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Mountainville, NY at a later date.

Barry’s family would like to thank all of the staff at Hospice of Orange and Sullivan Counties for their diligence, care, and kindness.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Cornwall Baptist Church, Friends of Cornwall Library, or Hospice of Orange and Sullivan Counties.
