Obituaries: Anthony J. Cavallo

March 04, 2018

ANTHONY J. CAVALLO
August 7, 1942 – March 1, 2018
Cornwall, NY

Anthony J. Cavallo, of Cornwall, NY entered into eternal rest on March 1, 2018 at St. Luke’s Cornwall Hospital, Newburgh, NY. He was 75 years old.

The son of the late Joseph Cavallo and Lena (DiPaolo) Cavallo, Anthony was born on August 7, 1942 in Bronx, NY, joining his sister, Lucille and a large extended family of aunts, uncles and cousins with whom he would enjoy his childhood years.

Anthony graduated from Mt. St. Michael Academy in the Bronx in 1960. He served his country as a member of the U.S. Army Reserve and honorably discharged in 1968. In 1964, he joined the NY State Police and served in this honorable career for 24 years. He retired in 1988 as an investigator with the Bureau of Criminal Investigation. Anthony then worked in real estate and as an insurance investigator with AIG until 2010. Not willing to be fully retired, he went on to serve as an aide to his dear friend, Senator Bill Larkin.

On December 6, 1964 he married the love of his life, Elizabeth (BettyAnn) Morstatt. Together they enjoyed 53 years of marriage and raised their four children in Cornwall. They immersed themselves in all that the Cornwall community offers, spending countless hours enjoying Little League games, Cornwall Dragon football, and many events that created great friendships along the way. It brought great joy to Anthony and his wife to remain in Cornwall in their retirement years, staying connected with wonderful friends and neighbors, and having the joy of watching their grandchildren grow up.

Anthony served as a Cornwall Town Board member from 1992-1996, the Newburgh chapter of UNICO International as a member and past president, and was a member of the Retired Trooper’s Association and American Legion Post 1796.

A family statement reads: “Tony was a force of nature, a man of great thought, integrity and honor. He loved a good cigar, crossword puzzles, discussing history, debating politics, John Wayne movies, a good Italian meal, and traveling and dining with great friends, especially their best friends, Dick & Dottie Thorpe. Most of all, he loved spending time with his wife, his children and their spouses, and his seven beautiful grandchildren, especially at their annual beach vacation in Avalon, NJ. Tony left his mark on this world in so many ways and will continue to live on in our stories and cherished memories. He will be greatly missed.”

Anthony is survived by his beloved wife, Elizabeth Cavallo, at home; his sons: Joseph Cavallo and wife Kathi of New Windsor, NY; Anthony and wife Kara of Cornwall, NY; his daughters: Alicia Hughes and husband Ted of Cornwall on Hudson, NY, Amy Barkdoll and husband Clint, of Waynesboro, PA; his seven cherished grandchildren, Meghan and Kevin Hughes, Matthew Cavallo, Nicholas and Joseph Cavallo, Will and Luke Barkdoll; his adoring sister, Lucille Costanzo and brother in law Ralph; niece LeeAnn Sargeant (Alan) and nephews, Ronald Costanzo (Danielle), Steven Costanzo (Carla) and brother in law, George Morstatt along with many beloved cousins. He was predeceased by their beloved infant daughter in 1968.

Visitation will be held from 2pm to 4pm and 6pm to 8pm on Monday, March 5th at Quigley Bros. Funeral Home, 337 Hudson St. Cornwall on Hudson, NY. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10am on Tuesday, March 6th at the Church of St. Patrick and St. Mary, 55 Grand St., Newburgh, NY. Interment will follow in Woodlawn Cemetery, New Windsor, NY.

Memorial contributions in Anthony’s name may be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105 or The Arthritis Foundation, 122 East 42nd Street, Suite 2315, New York, NY 10168.
