Eulogy by Bella Harris

“I am so pleased and thankful that you came to comfort and support my family. It is an unfortunate but necessary occasion that everyone must experience. Now is the time when consolation is needed.

I also wish to apologize to anyone whom I may have hurt during my lifetime. Please forgive my indiscretions. I am sorry you were distressed. From where I am right now nothing could have been so terrible that another person should be or feel injured.

I have been very lucky. I have a caring family. I have a wonderful family. I have shared their accomplishments, their ambitions, some frustrations, some griefs. I have enjoyed my extended family to the fifth generation. What else can one ask?

I wore many hats in my lifetime. I had a fulfilled life. I was fortunate to know my maternal grandparents and my wonderful parents. I was a daughter, granddaughter, niece, sister, sister-in-law, cousin. I was a wife, mother, mother-in-law, aunt, grandmother, great grandmother, great-great grandmother, friend, student, teacher, amateur writer, bookkeeper, property owner, landlord, employer, employee. I was a partner in my husband’s business. I even wrote short stories that were published. I played piano for my own enjoyment. I took my courses and even after earning BA and MA degrees. I did some traveling. I have lived a full life.

Do not weep for me. Do not waste your energy on useless crying. Saying goodbye to someone you know and you love may be arduous. However, do not depredate my memory with wasteful tears. I love all of you and take memories of you with me. Should you happen to remember me at some future date, I hope it’s fondly.

Shalom, adieu, goodbye.”
